Way back years ago when teaching kids how to weld I had a certified welder come in one day to help. He said one of the most important steps in producing a good weld was to get in a comfortable postion so you could hold a steady arc. It's not always the easiest thing to do but I've found it really helps too when using a torch. Simply holding your elbows next to your side will help you control the movement of the rod. With the advice given by previous posters you should be able to do OK. I would definitely get some good books on welding.
