Subject: RE: 6011 - 6013 tricks ~

central - east central Minnesota -

Miller has a website that offers help for beginer welders and their welding machines. http://www.millerwelds.com/resources/communities/  They have online books to read and pick up tips there as well.

AS pointed out, if you haven't masted stick welding, you will not be able to have good welds with a wire feed welder. Learn stick first.

6011 rod requires a type of whiping action to "run" it correctly. I would discribe it as slight dipping into the puddle and pulling back out and off to the unwelded side (this is a very slight motion). Watch your weld puddle more then the arc of the rod. It makes all the difference in the world. As someone suggested, go to your local welder/repair guy and ask him to demonstrate. The rod requires about a 5° angle to it. Properly set, it should have a sound like bacon frying.

6013 rod requires a steady forward motion. If the amps are set correctly, after the arc is struck, you should be able to set the rod right on the metal being welded and move at a steady pace forward. Speed will vairy with thickness of metal - watch your weld puddle. The rod should have about a 5° angle to it.

AS suggested, get some scrap 1/8 or 1/4 metal plates and lay'em flat and weld on them. Lay out some streight beads. After they start looking good, then butt the plates together and weld the seam. After they start looking good the lay one plate on top of the other and weld the seams together. This is all repeat of the other post, but practice - practice - practice.
