Subject: RE: Magnesium levels

Centre county Pennsylvania, USA
We rented a farm this year that had been in alfalfa/grass for last 5 years. Soil tests showed it had average Mg level of 167 ppm and was low in both P and K. We applied P and K per soil test recommendations for corn and planted. At about knee high we found several areas with stunted/yellow corn so we pulled another set of soil samples in those areas. Attached soil test report shows that Mg was 716 ppm in those areas while P and K were still low. Recommended fix for following seasons is to apply P and K at double normal rate in those areas where Mg is excessive and DO NOT EVER apply hi-mag lime to fields on that farm, if lime is needed apply only hi-cal lime.

Lesson we learned is that hi-mag lime is not good for crops on that farm. Your mileage may vary..........
