Lenders won't let near as many get in near as deep because of bank consolidation. 40 years of consolidation later, many bank boards members no longer personally know their customers, and outside of the lender, who may be a glorified salesman, no decision maker at the bank knows the borrower personally. Pretty easy to bail a whole lot sooner with that model.
