A majority of people smoked or had to deal with a copious amount of second hand smoke in the 1950s. Since smoking can increase metabolism and reduce appetite, this could result in a population that is not overweight. Smoke breaks also took the place of a quick sugar fix during a coffee break.


Finally someone gets the right answer. There is a direct correlation between the time when it was discovered that smoking was bad and people started getting fat.
