Maybe there's something to deep ripping periodically??

I agree Jim, and by periodically, I'm leaning towards 5-8 years apart. In a no-till system, there is no place for using a regular deep ripper/disk ripper either as far as I can see. Ideally you want to do what I was trying to do last fall. Move at a slow speed with a bigger ripper so you slice through the hard pan, NOT shatter it. Doing this should leave good solid ground between the slots preventing rutting........especially with our wide tires. Minimal surface disturbance was and is my goal. Below is a picture of what what I believe no-till ripping under ideal conditions should look like. I have some pictures on my website but the day I took those pictures it was 25 degrees and there was an inch or so of frost so there was a lot more surface disturbance.
