So what's setting up a hard pan under your no-till fields? Normally, it would be the pressure the tillage tools cause compressing the soil. But you shouldn't have that. I'm not sure why you'd be talking hard pan. Or are you just talking that the bulk density of the soil is lower than it would be under tillage.

Have you tested bulk densities? Are they in the compacted categories? Or are you just thinking that the soil should be looser than it is?
