you need to have an environment close to the surface where roots can grow. If you have a bare soil surface, which can dry out, the roots are not likely to want to grow there. You should have a cover on that soil, so the soil stays cooler and does not dry out. Then you will be able to get those roots to grow closer to the surface and obtain those nutrients.
