Subject: RE: corn on corn.... hows it working for you?

We've been very happy with our corn on corn the past several years and we have one 8 acre creek bottom piece that's only been in beans twice in nearly 40 years that is usually our best corn. Most of our coc acres will get the stalks shredded with a batwing mower after harvest followed by a Soil Saver with 4" twisted points about 8" deep to bury residue. Last fall the weather held out and we ran over some of those acres with our Phillips harrow to level it out followed by another pass this spring and that seemed to work as good as anything we've tried so far. We've found that the rotary harrow does a much better job of breaking up the root balls than a field cultivator or soil finisher will do and two passes with the harrow leaves as nice of a seed bed as you could want. This year we do have some no-till corn on corn but it was the last corn we planted and it went six weeks on less than a quarter of an inch of rain so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
