I agree. With cheap corn ethanol can be profitable. High price corn I doubt they can compete. Will the oil companies let them compete. With record profits being taken by the oil companies, they have some wiggle room to push ethanol out if they deisre.
Biggest change I see on the next 10 year horizon is the amount of farmland that will change hands. Most farmers around me are in their 60's or 70's (dad's generation). Youngsters like me (30's-40's) have the desire to farm, but the economics do not allow a full time operation. We almost all work off the farm and do the night /weekend farmer warrior. Ten years I see the existing full timers wanting out, and unless things change I find it hard to pencil out being able to pay for the farm with the farm itself. Either some BTO will come in or something creative will have to occur for the "farms" to exist. I worry more about trying to do what I love for a living rather than having it only be a part time occupation/hobby.
