What do you have for land? Maximizing the acres you have is critical. Like others have said it can be as easy as grazing stalks after harvest. I got 20 head on 20 acres and got roughly 2 months of feed out of that on. Corn silage can produce a lot of feed on a small acre and can have enough time to get rye or some type of forage crop behind it too to feed cows. I graze stalks on the corn ground and feed the grain to feeders. Grazing stalks is an easy way to justify corn at these prices. For me it added almost 60$ an acre to my bottom line just doing that even just figuring 1$ a day a head. Which my actual cost of alfalfa is probably closer to 2$ a day. Soybeans are kind of a runt crop for me. Cows dont get any grazing behind it and sometimes it comes off so late that you cant get a decent cover to graze either... Corn and Alfalfa usually maximize the acre. Doesnt take a lot of corn silage acres to feed a lot of animals.
