I don't like being a downer, and I'm sure somebody will want to argue, but if you have to buy all of your feed, don't even do it. Cattle are a value added enterprise. You raise cattle because you have crops and can make more money feeding them than you can selling them. I'm here in mid Michigan too, I milked cows for 33 years, I switched to black cattle twenty years ago after everything was paid for. Starting out with them, with no feed? You'll never compete with the dairies for anything. Nothing against the potato guys, but they're like the dairy guys, if they want it, they'll get it. I knew somebody who rented some land that had started to get overgrown. He told one of the potato growers that he was surprised they weren't farming it. They told him that they'd get it after he cleared it.
