BLKCOW - 2/16/2024 10:56 We have the smallest beef cow herd since 1951 and there are a few reasons for it, but you hit on the biggest one, or more precisely the culmination of all of them. Old producers getting out with no one to replace them. Drought which causes high priced feed that you can't afford. Acres going to other crops and purposes that cattle can't compete with. But what is to be expected when the percentage of the beef dollar going to the producer was around 30% at the end of last year? Not the smallest in history but very close. But keep sending those checkoff dollars because it is really paying off.

That's what happens after decades of govt meddling & propping up farmland values.     Subsidized crop insurance and CRP have made grazing acres unaffordable for grazing.

Which in turn lowers demand for feed grains which leads to another round of low grain prices/crying bringing on more subsidies and more CRP enrollment, its a never ending circle.
