Pat, we've been banding all fertilizer since "85", 100% no-til since "92" and using cover crops since "01". Beans seem to really like the rye for a cover crop--we kill the rye about knee high in the spring, notil the beans, and band the plant food. The rye adds organic matter and is great for tilth and soil structure. My feeling is I want to add all the residue and organic matter to the soil I can because it's food for the soil life, and I want to maximize that activity because everything they do for me is free. More added residue has to be managed though or it will manage you. I don't think we've seen near the potential of these soils. Guess I'm going in these directions looking to raise the potential of our soils with less dependence on high costs inputs.
