Coldwater, Michigan
Ron, the rate you can safely put down the hole varies directly by soil type and how far away from the seed you place the fertilizer. Many people trim roots with their fertilizer applications and never really "see" it. In my fertilizer plots a few years ago we had 15 gallons of 28% 2" x 2" in sandy soil at planting. We later sidedressed 160 units of N on everything. One of the best looking treatments all year. Harvested it and we averaged over the 3 replications approximately 5 bushels per acre less corn than where we put just sidedressed nitrogen of approximately 160 units. The one side of the plant had trimmed roots.
