Ottawa, Ontario

Perhaps you just need to instill some independence outside of what you share.

If you keep your ground seperate, perhaps you could suggest that you wish to manage it on your own ie: make your own fertilizer plans, rotational and tillage plans.

You didn't mention how economically tied you are but perhaps you could suggest operating seperately. Meaning that you pay for all of the inputs on your acreage and the sales of that crop goes in your name.

I always farmed independently from my father. From the outside it may look like one operation but his is his, mine is mine, and we share a few things. Over time he learned to only offer advice if asked for help...that is the biggest lesson to stomach for the establishing generation to learn/accept.

In the end I hope you can carry on the family farm, but many farmers in the past have ventured out on their own and have become quite successful.

I trust that you will make the right decision that is best for you.
