Ron, I would guess to prove that the N broke the stalks down faster would be a little difficult. Maybe it's just my imagination but the stalks always seem to be decayed maore where we put N down in the fall. Our soil lab also recomends applying N to the stalks in the fall when going to 2nd yr corn for whatever that's worth.

I do remember one particular instance years ago. I was still in H.S. & it was the days of "soil bank" We had a 50 acre field of alfalfa in soil bank that were were plowing under in the early fall. Uncle who raised me knew that getting an AA applicator through all the roots the next spring would be difficult so dec ided to have 28% put on before we plowed the alfalfa under. I started plowing right behind the spray truck & got along fine the 1st day. That evening we got a light shower and after that we couldn't get enough traction to plow. Was using a SM with dual on land side, 7 or 8 125# weights on furrow wheel & pulling a #60 3x14" plow. We tried for several days to finish plowing but couldn't do anything. Finally we put a set of tire chains on the land wheels & finished plowing the field though it was a rather rough ride.

BTW, back then we figured 1ac/hr was good plowing.
