central Ia | When I started out farming,town kid that got to farm I started with 240 acres in 81, started raising hogs to help out, got up to over 500 acres then one landlord died and they sold the farm lost 280 acres and about that time it was get big or get out of hog, luckily got a job working for the county as a mechanic so for the next 25 yrs I was happy working full time and still being able to farm 320 acres, Didn't take long to figure out how many acres it would take to replace my job, the stress was pretty much all gone. Guess it's all in what you want to do, for me working full time with a steady income and benefits was worth more than trying to farm more acres.
