Interesting post with many great thoughts. I guess to me it would depend on how you are defining who you are and what you are identifying as a farmer.

Is a farmer just someone that only crop farms? Is a diversified operation a farm or are they something else?
Buy/sell/broker manure and spreading. Is that a farm?
Sell crop insurance. Is that a farm?
Selling seed. farm?
direct to consumer sales. farm?
food/grain/feed mill. farm?
rental properties for employees. farm?
market grain through livestock. farm?
custom feeding livestock. farm?
machinery buying/selling. farm?
writing DNR and NRCS regulatory plans. farm?
government lobbyist. farm?
custom work with equipment/labor. farm?
selling/generating energy from natural resources, grain, and fodder. farm?

There are so many things that can be a farm our could not be a farm. Simply saying a farm is a farm and "beating you out" based on how many "thousands of acres" they farm or how big their quad track is a poor way to judge an operation. You will not get ahead looking over the fence and envying or condemning how another operation operates. Find the competitive advantages that you, yourself can exploit. That applies in whatever career you are in. If you cant do that, your house will never be big enough, your truck will always be too old, and you wife will always be too ugly...
