SE MN | It's very simple. There are too many farmers and too many people who would like to farm, by at least half. The reason it is a struggle is that the industry doesn't need more farmers, it would do better with less. It is my contention that we could cut the number of farmers in half, put the worst, hardest to deal with 10% of farmland in conservation, and the operations could use better equipment and practices, producing the same or more. All the talk you hear about needing to feed the world and the average age of the farmer being too old is just talk to make you feel good. Every part of the industry is giving preference to fewer, larger operations. Your mistake is thinking that things "should" work out for the little guy. If you want to stick with farming, you'll need to find a way to be happy and grateful for what you have. | |
