Don't sell yourself or your time with your son short. And don't give up anything. Spend the money and get a good lawyer. You only have 4 more years until your son is done with high school, so your best quality time with him is now. It's easy right now to just give in to everything you ex wants, but you really don't want her dictating your relationship with your son. Push for joint custody, visitation every other weekend, one day during the week, and two weeks of vacation time to be used at your discretion. She's going to push for half your assets and income so you should at least get half of your son's time.
And when you get it, USE that time wisely. Don't let him just 'hang' or do video games. Your time together shouldn't be a chore for him get through each week. Get out and do things. Take him places, go hunting or fishing, four wheeling or what ever. Find something you both enjoy and do it. Remember, kid first, work second. Of course he's not going to enjoy coming to visit if you put work before your time with him. You got 4 short years, don't waste them.
