dpilot, quit questioning yourself. You blew through an intersection you have been at many times. Something went wrong. When you say you hit the brakes and "basically nothing happened", that is exactly what happened.
You expected the brakes to work and they didn't. IT'S REALLY THAT SIMPLE.
