30 years ago, I was riding with a rural mail carrier on a twisting gravel road, lined with trees on both sides.
I thought he was driving pretty fast, he said he hit a farmer in a 2 ton truck on a curve in that section once: "I swear, I picked up speed when I hit the brakes."
I thought, "that's when you realized how fast you were going".
To the OP, you said you were trying to slow down enough to make the turn, where there any stop signs at any of these intersections?
If so, running or rolling through stop signs isn't something you want to teach your children.
