The point is you want to know how many seeds you are buying. I understand that. The smallests lots created by most companies run around 5000 units. Some companies pull in multiple growers fileds into one bin which may be upwards of 50-100K bushel. If you consider a 5000 unit lot, most companies run a 1 lb seed count on that lot. That is 1 lb out of 250,000 lbs. Not a very big sample. The corn you buy is graded in as many as 8 or more shapes and sizes. It is very accurate to weigh a 1lb sample from a graded lot and be confident that you 80,000 unit bag is probably within 1%. That same 5000 unit lot of beans if it were graded might produce 1000 units at 2500 seeds per lb, another 1000 units at 2800 another 1000 at 3200, another 1000 at 3500 and another 1000 at 3800. The point is if companies go to seed count sales(ie 130K units) the way they sample and calculate the 130K unit will be no different or accurate than the way it's done today. We grow for a small seed company who works with 10+ different companies and the word is that seed companies are somewhat for this. Today they must be within 5% of the tagged seed count which is a very toough target. If they go to 130K unit bags they will make sure that they get 130K plus in evey bag(as long as they get 130K in the bag they won't violate state regs even if they go over by 30K seeds per bag). They are already licking their chops at what to charge extra for this percieved benefit that actually doesn't exist. I am not advocating grading beans by size, it is a waste, but they only way to accuarately get the counts you want is to grade them, then count the graded sub lots.
