| Haven't had time to read other suggestions. Id suggest developing a set pattern of going to bed at a repeated time first of all. Next, don't watch the news or any tv or internet at all before bed. No news period. Those with internet addictions may find this tough to accomplish. One method may be to go on a cell phone and internet fast and cleansing.
Don't eat or drink anything after 6 pm. 5 pm might be better.
No caffeine whatsoever in the evenings or at night period.
No nicotine in any form or energy drinks.
Learn mind relaxing techniques along with prayer and listen to soothing music without commercials. Heavy metal is not soothing music,
Something that helped a lot was wearing a soft sleep mask to bed that fits comfortably and stays put. I chose the sleep mask since security lights at night manage to infiltrate the window blinds. The goal is to not allow lights to interrupt or cause any additional brain stimulation. wearing a lightweight sleep mask was more tolerable for me.
The latter above so far made a big difference in sleep quality and duration.
By going to bed at a consistent time you can train the brain to idle down.
