They don't need 100% backup like wind and solar do.

You won't have all coal, nat gas and nuclear plants down at the same time.   But that can and does happen with wind and solar.


And the base load generation plants are actually dependable for producing the amount of power that they are built to produce vs 50% on a real good day for wind and solar.
